Teaching and Learning
Plover-Whiting Elementary School Learning Targets
At Plover-Whiting Elementary, our goal is to foster a culture of continuous growth and achievement for all students. To ensure we are meeting high academic standards, we have identified the following learning targets for the current school year:
-
Increase Student Achievement in ELA (English Language Arts):
- Achieve a 3% growth in ELA proficiency as measured by the State Forward Exam.
- Focus on strengthening foundational reading and writing skills across all grade levels.
-
Increase Student Achievement in Mathematics:
- Achieve a 3% growth in Math proficiency as measured by the State Forward Exam.
- Emphasize problem-solving, critical thinking, and application of mathematical concepts in real-world scenarios.
-
Promote Individual Student Growth:
- Ensure that every student demonstrates measurable progress in ELA and Math, regardless of their starting proficiency level.
- Utilize differentiated instruction and targeted interventions to meet the diverse needs of all learners.
-
Strengthen Family Engagement:
- Partner with families to support student learning through clear communication, resources, and opportunities for involvement.
- Encourage families to actively participate in their child’s education, fostering a collaborative school community.
-
Enhance Professional Development:
- Provide ongoing professional learning opportunities for staff to implement evidence-based teaching strategies and interventions effectively.
- Focus on data-driven decision-making to identify and address areas for improvement.
By working together—students, staff, and families—we are confident in achieving these targets and continuing to build a strong foundation for academic success at Plover-Whiting Elementary.
FAB Fridays at Plover-Whiting Elementary
At Plover-Whiting Elementary, we are proud to implement Fun and Business (FAB) Fridays, a dynamic program designed to enhance learning, foster community connections, and keep students actively engaged. FAB Fridays consist of three engaging rotations: Game On, Creative Connections, and Wildcat Ways.
-
Wildcat Ways:
In this rotation, students take lessons from our Character Strong curriculum and put them into action. Through hands-on activities, they develop teamwork and collaboration skills while practicing the core values taught in class. -
Game On:
Partnering with the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), this rotation provides students with opportunities to stay physically active while developing essential social-emotional skills. The activities focus on movement, teamwork, and fostering a positive sense of community. -
Creative Connections:
This rotation is designed to bring external and community presentations together on one designated day. Whether it’s a visit from the fire department, police officers, or other community partners, Creative Connections ensures that students can learn from these valuable experiences without disrupting their routine throughout the week. By organizing these events on Fridays, we provide a fresh change to the schedule, helping students remain actively engaged as they approach the end of the week.
Benefits for Educators:
FAB Fridays also offer our educators time to take deep dives into their curriculum, collaborate with support staff, and create impactful, high-quality instruction. This dedicated time for professional focus ensures our teaching strategies remain effective and aligned with student needs.
Outstanding Results:
Plover-Whiting’s innovative approach to learning and teaching has yielded significant results. Last year, our students achieved a 10% growth on the Forward Exam, an impressive accomplishment considering that 3% growth on the Forward Exam is considered aggressive by state standards. Additionally, major and minor behaviors have reduced by 74%.
Through FAB Fridays, we are building a balanced, engaging, and effective environment that supports both student achievement and professional excellence. Through FAB Fridays, we are able to balance fun, learning, and personal growth, making Fridays a day that both students and staff look forward to every week!
